The Rewind Button- Exile on Main Street

I know its Wensday, but I was antsy to get this out there.

I will admit, I am not a huge fan of the Rolling Stones. I mean I like them but I wouldnt fly across the country to go see them. I just checked and apart from Exile on Main Street which I downloaded for this blog and the Glee version of ‘You Cant Always Get What You Want’, I dont have any other Stones songs. And after listening to Exile, im fairly certain its gonna stay that way.

I dont know, something about them makes me not want to listen to them. I respect them as musicians but I constantly find myself disapointed in them, they dont pull me in and keep me. Thats just me.

I did however LOVE the song ‘Sweet Virginia’ it was the only one that I listened to more then once, lryically its beautifully simple and pure I mean look:

Wadin’ through the waste stormy winter,
And there’s not a friend to help you through.
Tryin’ to stop the waves behind your eyeballs,
Drop your reds, drop your greens and blues.

Thank you for your wine, California,
Thank you for your sweet and bitter fruits.
Yes I got the desert in my toenail
And I hid the speed inside my shoe.

But come on, come on down Sweet Virginia,
Come on, honey child, I beg of you.
Come on, come on down, you got it in ya.
Got to scrape the shit right off you shoes.

I want you to come on, come on down Sweet Virginia,
I want you come on, honey child, I beg of you. .
I want you come on, honey child you got it in you.
Got to scrape that shit right off you shoes.

But come on, come on down Sweet Virginia,
Come on, come on down, I beg of you.
Come on, come on down, you got it in you.
Got to scrape that shit right off you shoes. “

I love it.

makes me me want someone to want me to come home and scrape the shit off my shoes.

somewhere a clock is ticking

So this past week Ive gotten a few new roommates. This winter it was me and and two guys, now its me an 7 guys, and I have to admit, I LOVE IT!  I love living with guys, its so much less drama. Ive lived with a bunch of people

  1. The super-paranoid Spanish chick in First year
  2. The all boy emo/rock band
  3. The Seth Cohen
  4. The Beauty Queen
  5. The Fashionista with a borderline drinking problem
  6. BettyLivin
  7. The French Chef and the Alcoholic (They were a couple)
  8. The Loud Mouth (who actually turned into a good friend)
  9. The Self-Rightious Vegan
  10. 2 AMAZING Australians
  11. My Boss
  12. The Former Booty Call

And I cant say theyve all been good. But theye all given me some storys. Aside from BettyLivin living with the guys has been the best roommmate stich so far.

One of the new ones has this Jax from Sons of Anarchy/ Ryan Dunn from Jackass vibe going on and its sexy as hell (his longterm girl agrees), ones a hilarious chef from Quebec who loves hip hop and dresses like he’s in a 90’s sitcom, ones got this John Mayer thing going on, ones a wanna be gangsta with a heart of gold, the other one is this adorkable hipster who looks EXACTLY like Shea Weber of the Nashville Preadators. and the other two are my winter roommates, the giant and the lumberjack. (not actually a lumberjack, he just looks like one)

Im kinda stoked for whats gonna come this summer, and apparenty we have 2 more people coming, one of the Austrailians I used to live with and a ski bum Scotsman.

Things are a changing, and I’m digging it. My good friends just had there second child (a beautiful daughter named after a character in one of her favorite movies) and i recently found out that another good friend is expecting her second as well. Lives moving forward for everyone, and thats a good thing.

Somewhere a clock is Ticking is a  Snow Patrol song and the title of  the One Tree Hill episode that gave me one of my most favourite quotes from the show, which sums up how I feel about life moving on.

“Remember tonight, for it is the beginning of always. A promise, like a reward for persisting through life so long alone. A belief in each other and the possibility of love. A decision to ignore simply rise above the pain in the past. A covenant, which at once binds two souls and yet severs prior ties. The celebration of the chance taken and the challenge that lies ahead. For two will always be stronger than one. Like a team braced against the tempests of the world. And love will always be the guiding force in our lives. For tonight is mere formality. Only an announcement to the world of feelings long held, promises made long ago in the sacred space in our hearts.”

The Rewind Button- Whats Going On.

Admittedly, my musical tastes are all over the map. I listen to as much Childish Gambino as I do Zack Brown Band. I dig music from the 40’s and musicals and swedish death metal. I just love music. So when this weeks album turned out to be ‘Whats Goin On’ by Marvin Gaye, I was stoked. ‘Heard It Through The Grapevine’ is SOOO great and is featured in one of my all time favourite movies ‘The Big Chill’ (Watch it if you havent, its AMAZING) So naturally I had high hopes for this album.

I was not by any means, disapointed. The album is so soulfull and beautiful. You can hear the passion in Gayes voice on all the tracks, ‘Wholy Holy’ was a delightful surprise, the insturmental alone is the perfect blend of jazz and soul. Then with the lryics…. its just wicked. I love me some Marvin.

Top Songs: Flying High, Whats Goin On and Wholy Holy.

searching for a former clarity

The Rewind Button is a music blogging project that my amazing friend BettyLivin (ive talked about her before, shes my blog guru) started. A bunch of people review the top 40 albums (according to Rolling Stone) and post there reviews each week. We talked about it over lunch and now im doing it to! So since im a little late to the game my first one will be this Thursday, and its on ‘Whats Goin On’ by the legendary Marvin Gaye.   Its number 6 on the list.

Since i got a late start, i listened to the other 5 albums  and compiled a list of my favoirite songs from each, because lets face it, Im a sucker for lists. Here goes:

  1. Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band (The Beatles): With A Little Help from my friends- I just dig this song, I have NEVER heard a cover I didnt like
  2. Pet Sounds (The Beach Boys): Here Today. Just got bumped to my 3rd fave TBB song (1- Forever, 2- Surfin USA)
  3. Revolver (The Beatles): Eleanor Rigby- Pure musical greatness
  4.  Highway 61 Revisited (Bob Dylan): Ballad of a Thin Man…. “mr jones….”
  5. Rubber Soul (The Beatles): Girl. Hands down one of my FAVOURITE Beatles songs of all times, if you disagree, listen to the ‘Across The Universe’ version done by Jim Sturgess. The song is clutch.

so theres 5, now 35 albums 🙂 ill say right now the ones im most stoked about are: Born to Run (Bruce Springsteen!), Kind Of Blue (Miles Davis), Rumors (Fleetwood Mac), The Joshua Tree (U2) and Hotel California (The Eagles)

(Also, ‘Searching For a Former Clarity’ is a song by Against Me!  and is the title of Season 6 episode of One Tree Hill. I also hope that by listening to some great music I can maybe get back to a better place personally because music always helps, always)

echos, silence, patience and grace

There’s just silence…There’s just silence. I come in here and I sit in silence and hear the echoes of who we used to be. And so I wish for patience, and grace, and strength to just let him be happy. Mostly I pray for the strength to not make his life worse because of what I want. That’s the toughest part, letting go, you know? That’s the part of grace that really sucks. – Peyton Sawyer

Ever since I heard this for the first time its kinda stuck with me.  Then I figured out that ‘Echos, Silence, Patience and Grace’ is the name of a Foo Fighters album and a line in one of there best songs ‘Home’.  ESPG….a mantra that I have used many a time, in a plethora of different situations and its always helped.

No matter how much we change ourselves, we are all echos of our former selves.  No matter how much we try to change,  we will always be some version of ourselves.  We grow but a part of holds on to who were were, good or bad. Whether it be a reminder to not be that person again, or the catalyst for us to be that person again. I have  a good friend who a few weeks ago celebrated being 3 years clean, he remembers who he was and is determined to not be that person again. His echo isnt good, but it keeps him moving forward, determined not to fall back into that life. I respect that about him, and though I would never say it to their face, it inspires me.

Silence is one of those weird things, it can be great or it can make you nuts. I happen to love comfortable silences, those moments where the room just fills with all the things you dont need to say.  The stillness that comes with silence is something that I not only enjoy but I consiciously seek out.  I think alot of the silences’s in peoples days go by unnoticed. We put so much stock in words, (dont get me wrong I LOVE words) but we forget how awesome silence can be, how comfortable it can feel. We could all use a little more silence, a little more stillness.

Patience is a virture.. I wish I had more patience, but I dont, and honestly I dont think alot of the people in my generation do. We are, as much as we all hate to admit it, a single serving society. The faster we get something, the happier we are. But as the old saying goes, “stop and smell the roses”. I try  to savor the simple moments,  taking a longer shower, walking a little slower, the feeling of the sun on my face, sipping coffee instead of gulping it down (i still gulp coffee, but i try to sip the second cup at least), gernerally taking the simple moments and embrasing them, noticing them.

I looked up the meaning of grace, there are 5 definintons. The one im gonna run with is “simple elegance or refinement of movement, courteous goodwill or an attractivley polite manner of behaving”. Ive always believed that grace is moving above your self, being the best version of yourself, even at your own expense.  The more I think about ESPG I realize that grace is all of those things. Its respecting the echos, its making the silences matter and striving for patience, that its grace.

maybe we all need some ESPG.  or at the very least embrace one of the four.

until next time.
